'Bangla' bill for House

Calcutta: The Bengal government will place a proposal in the coming session of the Assembly to change the name of the state to "Bangla" in all languages.

The Union ministry of home affairs had sent back the state's earlier plan to change the name to "Bengal" in English, "Bangla" in Bengali and "Bangal" in Hindi.

"We are bringing in an amendment to the original bill to change the name of the state of West Bengal to Bangla in all languages after the Centre raised objections to having different names of the state in different languages. The new proposal will be placed before the Assembly during the next session," said Partha Chatterjee, state education and parliamentary affairs minister, on Wednesday.

The Bengal Assembly had passed a resolution on August 29, 2016, changing the name of West Bengal to Bengal in English, Bangla in Bengali and Bangal in Hindi.

"But the proposal has to be passed in the Assembly before the state sends a formal request to the Centre to change the name," said a senior government official.
