Governing body of Behala College will be dissolved, says Partha
Kolkata: State Education minister Partha Chatterjee said on Thursday that the governing body of Behala College in Parnasree will be dissolved. The decision of the minister came in the wake of disturbance in the college since Saturday, following alleged attempts of extortion by the students' union. The Trinamool Congress controlled students' union at the college has already been dissolved on Wednesday.
Chatterjee visited the college on Thursday morning, which happens to be under his own constituency Behala West and held a meeting with the college principal and senior officials of the college and also spoke with the students. "I am shocked over the events that have unfolded in the college during the last few days. Such incidents of disturbance in the college will not be tolerated. The governing body of the college will be dissolved," Chatterjee said.
He reiterated on bringing back the academic ambience of the college. "I have spoken to all concerned in the college. I am hopeful that things have been settled. The students have been advised to attend their classes on a regular basis. We are constantly trying to boost education in our state," Chatterjee said.
The committee formed by the principal that was responsible for running the college's administration, was also dissolved on Thursday.
The agitating students had alleged involvement of outsiders in the college union and indulgence in extortion. It was alleged that the union was extorting money from students with low attendance, with the promise of making arrangements for them to sit for examination.
Around 200 students had less than 60 percent attendance in the college. A clash had broken out in the college on Wednesday and a student had sustained injuries.
