BALURGHAT: Some goons allegedly backed by Congress attacked the house of a local Trinamool Congress worker of Chopra in North Dinajpur on Wednesday night and while police reached the spot after receiving the official complaint early on Thursday, the men in khaki were also attacked by them.
Police said the incident occurred on Wednesday night when some goons backed by Congress had attacked the residence of Noimul Haque. His house was ransacked by the goons.
As police reached the spot early on Thursday for investigation, the goons attacked the cops. Indiscriminate bombs were hurled targeting police. The goons had also fired on them. The place soon turned into a battleground while in self-defence, police initiated measures against the miscreants.
During the scuffle, two persons identified as Samirul Islam and Ariful Islam were injured. Initially, they were admitted to Islampur sub-divisional hospital.
Later, the duo was shifted to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital for better treatment. Sources said the injured persons
received bullet injuries.
Police investigation has been on. None has been arrested so far. Chopra block Trinamool president Jakir Abedin Said: "Congress goons attacked our party worker Noimul without provocation.
Immediately after the Panchayat poll results were declared, Congress goons have started attacking Trinamool. The goons also attacked police while they reached the spot to probe into the incident." Sources said the goons had earlier attacked some Trinamool workers' houses at Chopra, the very next day after the poll result was
declared on May 17.
North Dinajpur police chief Shyam Singh said police are investigating into the case from all angles.
"Two injured persons were admitted to hospital," he added.
