Garbage segregation mission: Residents vow to keep city clean
Kolkata: The residents of New Town took a pledge on Friday that they would segregate garbage at source and help to make the city clean and green.
New Town Kolkata Development Authority ( NKDA) introduced the new system of segregating garbage at source from Friday. An awareness camp was held at Rabindra Tirtha which was inaugurated by Debashis Sen, chairman NKDA.
There was a workshop on solid waste management and there was a live demonstration to show where the residents will dispose the waste. The residents will have to buy two bins whose sizes have been determined by NKDA.
They will be disposing garbage in two separate bins meant for dry waste and wet waste. The waste will be collected regularly and NKDA has proposed to start composting with wet waste. The body has already set up a plant and the compost is being used as manure for production of organic vegetables.
The dry waste will be collected twice a week and NKDA is setting up a trenching ground at Patharghata. NKDA authorities have urged the residents to use the bins properly and put the waste in the specified bins. It may be mentioned that NKDA has taken several steps to make New Town a green and clean city.
Waste water is being used for roadside plants and state-of-the-art vehicles are being used to clean roads.
Later, a walk was organized in which the residents and the officials of NKDA took part. There was great enthusiasm among the participants and they have all agreed to cooperate with NKDa to make New Town a clean and green city.
