Fresh tension breaks out at NRS after dog bites 5-year-old girl

Kolkata: At a time when the controversy around the death of 16 puppies on NRS campus is yet to die down, fresh tension has gripped the hospital on Wednesday afternoon after a 5-year-old girl was bitten by a dog at the hospital premises.

The victim, Rani Mullick, resides in a shanty situated near the administrative building of NRS Medical College and Hospital. Her grandmother works as a contractual labour in the hospital. The family members of the victim said Rani was walking inside the hospital with a packet of potato chips in her hands when a dog came and bit her waist. Some family members of the patients came to her rescue and drove away the dog.

The victim girl received deep injuries around her waist. She was taken to the emergency ward of the hospital and released after primary treatment. The family members alleged that people were bitten by dogs on previous occasions.

It may be mentioned that a few days ago the hospital authorities had written to the Rogi Kalyan Samiti Chairman of the hospital seeking suggestions on how to handle issues related to cats and dogs inside the campus.

Some nursing students and nursing staff members had staged many protest demonstrations demanding proper sterilisation and vaccination of dogs inside the hospital campus.

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has already decided to conduct sterilisation and vaccination of dogs at NRS later this month. The hospital authorities have responded to the letter issued by the KMC in this regard and gave a 'go ahead' to the civic body.

The recent incident of the killing of 16 puppies by two nursing students inside the hospital campus sparked major outrage. Meanwhile, the two accused nursing students have joined their classes after they were granted bail by a city court.
