Four held for attempting to molest, murder woman over family dispute

Kolkata: Four persons have been arrested by Bidhannagar Woman Police Station for allegedly torturing, molesting and trying to murder a woman over some family dispute.

All the accused persons have been remanded to judicial custody by the Bidhannagar Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate's (ACJM) Court

on Thursday.

Bidhannagar Police has informed on Sunday that one Gulab Chand Shaw, a resident of Haridevpur, lodged a complaint at Bidhannagar Woman Police Station against his daughter's in-laws.

Police said the complainant's daughter was married to one Rakesh Shaw of Hatiara in 2015. Though there was no demand of dowry, the victim was tortured by her in-laws mentally and physically without any reason after marriage.

According to the sources, the couple had later shifted somewhere else and

lived separately. However, they came back to Hatiara.

On Sunday morning, when the victim entered the kitchen, she could smell traces of LPG inside the room and came out immeditely sensing danger. Later, it was identified that the nozzle of the LPG cylinder was intentionally kept open

by someone.

On Monday, she narrated the whole incident to her husband and he went to his family members for an answer.

It is alleged that when he confronted his family members — identified as Guddia Shaw (mother), Santosh Shaw (father), Sangita Shaw, Mira Shaw and Sunil Shaw, they allegedly assaulted the couple. It was also alleged that the victim was publicly disrobed.

When her husband tried to resist, he also got beaten up.

After Monday's incident, the victim narrated the incident to her father. On hearing the problem, Gulab decided to go to Hatiara to sort out

the matter for once and all.

On Tuesday, he went to meet his daughter. There he heard the incidents in detail and tried to convince the family members. He also urged them to maintain peace while

staying together. But that did not help much.

It was alleged that the victim was once again assaulted.

The accused person also hurled expletives and derogatory words at her. Failing to bear the humiliation, she locked herself in a room and consumed mosquito repellent oil with the intention to commit suicide. She was immediately rushed to Bidhannagar Sub-divisional Hospital where she has been admitted. Later on the basis of the complaint police arrested the four accused on charges of domestic violence, assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty, punishment for voluntarily causing grievous hurt, criminal intimidation and Attempt to murder.
