Forensic team visits Park Street Metro Stn

Kolkata: A state forensic team on Friday night visited the Park Street Metro station and examined the spot where Sajal Kumar Kanjilal (66) was electrocuted to death after

falling from a moving train inside the tunnel between Park Street and Maidan Metro stations on July 13.

A team comprising seven members reached the Park Street Metro station at around 10.45 pm on Friday and went into the tunnel. They collected samples and measured the distance between the spot where the victim was found lying and the station, examining in detail as to how the incident took place. The members of the forensic team conducted the entire examination for nearly an hour.

They suspect that the victim fell from the train after it was stopped with a jerk inside the tunnel, few metres away from the station. He was electrocuted to death after he came in contact with the third rail. The report would soon be submitted to the police. It may be mentioned here that Kolkata police had started a separate probe into the death of Kanjilal following the incident besides Metro Railway also initiating an inquiry.

The victim was dragged through the tunnel between Park Street and Maidan Metro stations with his body hanging precariously from an AC rake with his arm stuck in the door. The rake started moving and the victim fell on the track after the train stopped inside the tunnel. He was declared brought dead after being taken to SSKM Hospital.

After starting a separate investigation, the Kolkata Police urged the Metro Railway to provide the documents and other details. Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) Sailesh Garg also inspected the 'Medha' rake which was involved in the incident. The CRS asked Metro Railway to install a convex mirror at the driving motorman's end of both platforms in all stations as soon as possible to ensure that the motorman could see the platform and the coach doors clearly before closing the doors and commencing towards the next station.
