Miscreants looted Rs 51 lakh in old invalid currency notes from four Baguiati businessmen. Later, police arrested five persons in connection with the case from South 24 Parganas on Friday.
The businessmen were reportedly using back routes to exchange their old undeclared money, which was in demonetised currency.
They took the old note to some men in South 24 Parganas' Nodakhali area. These men promised the businessmen to exchange their old high value notes with new Rs 500 and Rs 2000 notes.
However, after the businessmen turned up at Nodakhali to exchange the old notes, the men instead robbed them.
Police learnt that the victim businessmen were residents of Baguiati. They collectively had taken around Rs 51 Lakh in old demonetised notes to exchange them with new ones.
The accused men had advised the businessmen not to inform their banks about the transaction.
Adhering to their advice, the businessmen brought their old notes to Nodakhali.
The accused persons overpowered the traders, snatched the bags filled with old notes and immediately escaped.
After being robbed, the businessmen lodged a complaint with the Nodakhali police station.
Soon after starting the investigation, the police managed to locate and arrest the five accused. They are also being interrogated
Investigators are curious to know as to why the accused had robbed demonetised notes, knowing very well that they hold no value.
However, the investigators suspect that the accused persons might have connections with other people or gangs dealing in counterfeit currency rackets.
