Fire breaks out at Burrabazar garment warehouse, none hurt

Kolkata: A major fire broke out at a garment warehouse on Armenian Street in Burrabazar on Sunday night. Five fire tenders controlled the fire within two hours. No one has been injured in the incident.

According to locals, smoke was seen coming out of the building located at 32 & 33, Armenian Street at around 8:30 pm on Sunday. Immediately, the occupants of the building were alerted. It was found that the fire had broken out in a closed warehouse filled with garments on the first floor. Immediately, locals started spraying water after breaking the shutter lock. But that did not help as the fire had started spreading to the floors above.

The occupants then started using the fire extinguishers to douse the fire, which stopped it from spreading. Meanwhile, five fire tenders were pressed into action and the fire was controlled by 10 pm. State Fire minister Sujit Bose and Director General (DG), Fire, Jag Mohan went to the spot and supervised the whole operation.

Bose said: "The fire has been controlled due to efforts by the firefighters. But it is quite alarming that the residential buildings are being used as commercial ones. As the passage was narrow, firefighters faced difficulties while working. The cables spread across the area are also in bad shape. The residents and businessmen should look into the matter."
