Fire at Behala apartment, none hurt

Kolkata: A fire broke out at a shop opposite Unitech gate 1 in New Town. The fire spread to three other shops and four fire tenders have been pressed into action. The fire fighters could not douse the flames till the last reports came in.

Two other fire incidents have been reported in the city. One at a flat in Behala and another one at a warehouse in Garfa. No casualty has been reported in any of

the incident.

On Thursday afternoon, some residents of basak Bagan Road noticed black smoke coming out of a flat located on the third floor at towered apartment. The fire brigade and police were immediately informed. Meanwhile, locals heard the sound of a dog barking from inside the flat. Some of them tried to rescue the dog but failed as they found no space to enter the flat.

Within a while, three fire tenders reached the spot and started dousing the flames. But due to the lane being narrow, ladders could not be used to climb up and spread water. The fire fighters considered the adjacent house as a means to spread water but as the roof door was locked, they became helpless. In that moment, a person identified as Shyamal Purkait, a taxi driver by profession, took a water jet from the fire fighters and started climbing up the rain water pipes. As the intensity of the fire came down, the fire fighters used the stairs to go up and started spreading water using the front door. Later, the dog was also rescued.

In the other incident on Wednesday night, a fire broke out at a warehouse filled with decorating materials at Ramlal Bazar in Garfa. At around 10:45 pm, locals noticed smoke billowing out of a warehouse.

Around five fire tenders controlled the fire in two hours.
