Father arrested for selling twin daughters
Kolkata: A man has been arrested for allegedly selling his twin daughters at Gaighata in North 24-Parganas on Sunday. Police later recovered the two-month-old twins from Thakurnagar and Ramchandrapur.
The sleuths have also seized Rs 1.45 lakh cash from the arrested person. Sources informed that Ratan Bramha and Rama Bramha of Baduria, Ramchandrapur in Gaighata has a ten-year-old daughter as well.
Two months ago, Rama gave birth to twin daughters at Thakurnagar hospital. A helper of a caterer Ratan got worried as to how he would bring up his children.
After returning from hospital, the Bramha family behaved normally with their neighbours. On Friday, locals saw both Ratan and Rama were going somewhere with their new born twins. However, at night when Ratan returned, some neighbours noticed that there was no sign of either Rama or the twins.
Smelling a rat, the locals informed Gaighata Police Station. Police detained Ratan and started their interrogation.
In the face of interrogation, Ratan broke down and admitted he sold his twin daughters to two childless couples without any money transaction. He later sent Rama to Alipurduar to her parental home.
Ratan was immediately arrested. Police later went to those addresses given by Ratan and recovered the twins.
From the couples, police came to know that Ratan had received Rs 1.8 lakh by selling his twins. Wasting no time, another team from Gaighata Police Station raided Ratan's house and found Rs 1.45 lakh cash.
Sources informed that the sleuths are trying to contact Rama to find out whether she was forced to sell her children.
The district administration has been informed about the incident.
Both the children are now admitted to Thakurnagar hospital. They will be handed over to district Child Welfare Committee (CWC) in due course of time. The CWC will later send the children to a home.
