Farakka among five cities in country to get AYUSH hospital

Kolkata: Farakka in Murshidabad is among the five cities in the country to get an AYUSH Hospital — set up by the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) — thereby promoting the traditional system of medicine and ensure that people in the area can access affordable treatment.

Union of AYUSH Ministry has roped in the public sector unit — NTPC — to open a hospital exclusively dealing in Ayurveda, one of the oldest modes of treatment in the country.

The AYUSH Ministry had urged the Union Power ministry to take necessary steps so that NTPC can go ahead and construct the five AYUSH hospitals across the country.

The Power Ministry has agreed to carry out the project of setting up five such hospitals through NTPC at different locations in the country — Farakka in West Bengal, Kayamkulum in Kerala, Koldam in Himachal Pradesh, Tapovan in Uttarakhand and Vindhyachal.

It may be mentioned that after coming to power Mamata Banerjee government has done significant improvement in the AYUSH sector in the state. Some hospitals exclusively dedicated to AYUSH have come up in the state. The collaboration between the Union AYUSH Ministry and NTPC will give it a further boost.

The main purpose of the project is to ensure that people in Farakka and adjoining areas can avail the treatment at an affordable price in the hospital. The employees of NTPC may also reap the benefits once the hospital is constructed.

A senior Ayurveda practitioner of J B Roy State Ayurvedic Medical College & Hospital said poor people often fail to avail Ayurvedic treatment due to high cost of medicines.

If both the state government and the Centre work toward the expansion of AYUSH in the state, people of the state will be immensely benefitted.

The Ministry of AYUSH through its continuous effort managed to get NABH accreditation for its various institutions in the country in order to maintain certain qualities and also to meet some parameters.

As many as 62 AYUSH hospitals have got the NABH accreditation so far. Ministry made it obligatory for AYUSH hospitals to get NABH accreditation to meet some standards and parameters.

Dr Sumit Sur of National Ayurveda Students and Youth Association said it is a great move by the AYUSH Ministry to ensure that people from all walks of life can avail affordable treatment.
