Family stages protest after baby dies in mother's womb

Kolkata: The family members of a pregnant woman staged a protest demonstration at Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital on Saturday night alleging that their baby died in her womb due to medical negligence of the doctors.

The incident had triggered tension among the patients undergoing treatment in the hospital. The family members of the victim staged a protest demonstration in front of the doctors and hospital staff. They brought the charges of serious negligence against the hospital authorities and demanded a high-level inquiry into the incident.

A huge contingent of police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. The demonstration was lifted by the family members following the intervention of the senior police officers, who assured them that the matter would be looked into.

The woman, Minara Khatun, a resident of Gobindapur area under Hariharpara police station in Murshidabad, was brought to the hospital on Saturday morning. Around 5 pm on the same day, the doctors asked to perform an USG on the patient.

The family members of the woman alleged that during the examination, the nursing staff members told the patient that the baby was moving inside the womb. But later, the family members of the patient were told that the baby had died inside the mother's womb.

The victim's family members also alleged that the patient was kept in bed unattended till Sunday morning without conducting a delivery on the patient. Following the agitation, the patient was taken to the operation table, claimed a family member of the victim.

The family members lodged a complaint with a senior administrative official in the district following which the doctors acted promptly. If it was not done on time, the mother would have also died, alleged the family members.
