Family members ransack hospital after patient's death

Kolkata: Family members of a patient, who died of alleged medical negligence at Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute, ransacked a portion of the hospital and attacked the doctors and the staff members.
A junior doctor of the hospital was seriously injured in the incident. According to police, a patient identified as Gopal Koyal was taken to the emergency ward of the hospital on Monday morning by his family members. A resident of Tollygunge, Koyal was suffering from cancer.
The family members of the victim said he had visited the hospital earlier also to consult a doctor. He was taken home and had been under medication of the doctor. On early Monday morning he complained of respiratory distress following which he was rushed to CNCI.
The family members have alleged that when he was taken to the emergency ward of the hospital there was no doctor to attend their patient and they were asked to go to the Outpatient department where the doctor had been seeing the patients.
On reaching the outpatient department, the family members were asked to wait as the doctor was in the operation theater. The patient remained unattended for quite a long time as a result of which his condition deteriorated and he died. Following the incident, the family members went on rampage. They broke furniture and windowpanes. A huge contingent of police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Police are yet to make any arrest.
