The Health department of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) bought three crates of eggs from a shop in Sealdah which were later sent for necessary tests.
The police on Friday arrested one Selim Ansari who had sold 'plastic' eggs to Anita Kumar, a resident of Tiljala.
A KMC team led by Atin Ghosh, member, mayor in council (Health) raided a shop on Manmohan Dey
Row in Sealdah and bought three crates of eggs.
Mayor Sovan Chatterjee had on Thursday ordered an inquiry after Kumar allegedly purchased eggs made of plastic from Ansari. She had also alleged that her daughter had fallen ill after consuming a plastic egg.
Ghosh said the eggs had been sent to the directorate of Animal Resources and Animal Health for necessary tests.
He said the retail shopkeeper of Tiljala had bought eggs worth Rs 95,000 from a wholesale shop owner in Sealdah. The KMC teams also visited several markets and collected samples of eggs which were sent for tests. However, no fresh complaint of purchase or sale of plastic eggs has been reported.
The woman who had lodged the complaint had alleged that the plastic eggs looked so original that she could not differentiate. The matter was detected when her daughter felt sick and complained of stomach ache after eating an egg.
Ghosh said that the Sealdah shop had received bulk supply of eggs from Guntur in Andhra Pradesh. He further said that with the advent of
summer, KMC had intensified its drives against cut fruits and coloured water. He urged people not to panic and
assured that KMC would take every possible step to find out the source of plastic eggs.
