Fake currency rackets busted, four arrested
Kolkata: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Border Security Force (BSF) have recovered fake currency notes worth Rs 11 lakh from different places of Malda district in two separate raids on Saturday night. Four persons have been arrested so far in connection with the incidents.
Two different agencies have raided Kaliachak and Vaishnabnagar area and busted the fake currency rackets. It is a matter of investigation to figure if there was any connection between the two incidents.
Acting on a tip off, a team of BSF officials raided Kaliachak's 18 Mile area on National Highway 34. Two youths were carrying the fake notes on a motorcycle. They tried to flee the spot after noticing the BSF personnel. Some of the BSF jawans managed to get hold of the duo. They are the residents of Kaliachak area. They were later handed over to the police. Fake notes worth around Rs 4 lakh have been seized from their possession. All the fake notes were of 2,000 denominations, police said.
In a separate incident, the CID carried out a raid in Township More area of Vaishnabnagar. Two persons have been arrested for smuggling fake currency notes. Fake notes worth nearly Rs 7 lakh were recovered from them.
According to police, the arrested persons are the residents of Jainpur village under Vaishnabnagar police station. The CID had specific information that fake currency would be smuggled through the area and conducted raids along the border on Saturday night.
It is suspected that some other people, who are involved in smuggling fake currency notes, might have fled after apprehending a raid.
The sleuths were trying to locate the source from where the fake notes had come into India.
Police have started an investigation in this regard. Police suspect that some Bangladeshi nationals is involved in the incident. They are also trying to know the names of the persons involved in the racket.
According to the preliminary investigation, the investigators believe that the notes were made in Bangladesh. Police are investigating the route the smugglers had used to smuggle in the fake currency notes.
