Fake currency racket busted, 2 held

In a major breakthrough, Malda Police busted a fake currency racket from Vaishnabnagar area recovering fake currency notes of around Rs one lakh.

Police have arrested two youth for their alleged involvement in this racket. Police have also recovered firearms and cartridges from their possession. Acting on a tip-off, the police raided a village under Block-III of Kaliachak near THE India-Bangladesh border on late Sunday night and seized the fake currency notes.

The accused, who have been identified as Bibhishon Mondal (19) and Bankim Sarkar, were arrested from a house. Police came to know that the accused had taken shelter in the house with fake currency notes.
It may be mentioned that on March 5, the police seized fake currency notes of Rs four lakh from a hotel situated close to Malda station and two persons were arrested in this connection. Police said that they recovered around 50 fake currency notes of Rs 2,000 from the possession of the accused. Police came to know during interrogation that both the accused were local residents.

They have been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code on charges of circulating fake currency notes. The cops have interrogated the accused to know about the modus operandi.
According to the preliminary investigation, police suspect that currency notes were brought into the country from Bangladesh. Police have started a probe to know where theaccused were taking the fake currencies.
Police have started a detailed probe in this regard and suspect that the accused were a part of an interstate fake currency racket.

The accused have been interrogated to know about the other members of the racket. It can be mentioned here that two persons including a Bangladeshi national were arrested from Samsherganj in Murshidabad on Sunday when they were trying to bring in fake Indian currencies by crossing the river. Police recovered fake currency notes from them. Now, police are investigating if the two incidents had any links as one of the accused arrested in Sunday's incident was from Malda too.
