Elderly patient jumps from hospital roof, dies

Kolkata: An elderly person reportedly committed suicide by jumping from the roof of a private hospital near Nagerbazar late on Monday night. The deceased has been identified as Swapan Kumar Roy (61) of MC Garden Road in Dum Dum.

According to sources, Roy was admitted at the hospital with complaints of scrotal abscess on Thursday. On Monday night at around 1:20 am, he managed to give a slip to the security persons and went up to the roof of the hospital, from where he jumped.

Security staff on duty at the main gate heard something fall and went to check. After they saw Roy lying on the ground, they called the officials. After he was shifted inside the hospital, doctors declared Roy brought dead. Later, police sent the body to Sagar Dutta State General Hospital in Kamarhati for autopsy examination.

Questions have come up as to why the door of the roof was open. According to sources, hospital authorities told the police that some work related to hospital operations was being done on the roof, which is why it remains open. Roy's family members have questioned how he went up to the roof evading security surveillance. However, the hospital could not be reached for their statement. Till Tuesday night, no complaint has been lodged in connection with the incident.
