An elderly man from Garfa was badly beaten up by some local goons when he protested against consuming alcohol in the area.
The victim, Kalyaneswar Ganguly, suffered serious injury on his left eye when the miscreants hit him. Police have arrested two persons in this connection so far who were involved in the incident.
Police said that Ganguly, a resident of B Garden Road, was waiting outside his house late on Wednesday night as his son was yet to return home from his office. He found that some youth were boozing in the area. When he protested against their consuming alcohol, the accused started abusing the victim. They hurled slangs at the victim too.
When Ganguly asked the accused as to why they were abusing him, the miscreants became furious and attacked the victim. They pushed him on the ground and started beating him up indiscriminately.
They punched on his face and abdomen. This led to a serious injury on his eye. Ganguly's son Kaustav by the time reached the spot and
found that the miscreants were beating his father. When Kaustav protested against the incident, the accused beat him up too.
Attracted by the screams, locals came out of their houses to find the father son duo was lying on the road with injuries on their bodies. The accused, however, had fled from the spot before anybody could reach the spot. The victim father was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where the doctors said that the injury on his eye was serious.
The incident triggered tension in the locality. The family members of the victim alleged that the accused are involved in the syndicate business in the locality and they often consume alcohol in the open. The locals do not dare to raise a voice against them as they are associated with some local political leaders.
The family members later lodged a complaint with the local police station on the basis of which police have started a probe. After carrying out a search, the police have arrested two youth who allegedly led the attack. Police are conducting raids to nab the other culprits in this connection.
The incident happened a day after an elderly woman died at Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital who was gang-raped and brutally tortured by miscreants at Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas more than three weeks ago.
