Elderly man assaulted by son

Kolkata: In a bizarre incident, an elderly person was assaulted by his son after he refused money for drugs at Chetla in south Kolkata on Wednesday night.

The accused Rajat Dutta was arrested on Thursday and was later granted bail by Alipore Court on the grounds of being a minor. Nilratan Dutta in his 60s has been admitted to MR Bangur Medical College Hospital with serious injuries.

According to local sources, Rajat demanded money from his father on Wednesday night for taking drugs.

This has been going on for the last few months. But this time, when Rajat demanded money, his father refused to cough up money saying that he didn't have anything to offer him. Suddenly, the youth picked up a sharp cutting instrument and stared assaulting his father in a fit of rage.

The elderly person raised a cry in a bid to save himself from the sudden attack. His screams drew attention of his neighbours. They rushed to his rescue which frightened the youth and he fled away.

"We found him lying on the floor of the house bleeding profusely. We wasted no time and rushed him to MR Bangur hospital in Tollygunge. Police visited the spot and examined the site" Ramen Das, a neighbour said. The accused was arrested from a hideout in Chetla area on Wednesday late night.
