Drunk youth molest girl, rough up her brother

A Class X girl was allegedly molested by some drunken youth and her cousin brother was beaten up when he tried to protect his sister from the miscreants.

The incident had taken place in Basulia village of Mahishadal area of East Midnapore on Sunday night when she was returning home from her private tuition. It was alleged that the victim, a resident of Gopal Nagar was returning home with her cousin brother. When they were passing through Basulia More, some youth stopped their way. They were boozing by the side of the road. The accused hurled expletives at the victim.

The victim's cousin, a student of Class XII, who was accompanying the victim, protested against the incident. The accused who were five in number, attacked the boy who received injuries in the incident. The girl tried to flee from the spot but the accused youth chased her. They managed to catch her a few meters away and molested the girl.

Alarmed by the screaming of the victim, the local residents rushed to the spot for her rescue. They took the victim girl and her cousin to the Basulia primary health centre for treatment. The family members of the victim lodged a complaint with the police on the basis of which a probe has been initiated.

Police are conducting raids at various areas of the district to nab the culprits. Police have registered FIR against eight persons. On Monday, they arrested one youth from the area for his alleged involvement in the incident.

The local people have alleged that some local youth booze in the area after sun down and often create nuisance with women passing through the areas. They also alleged that despite repeated pleas, police failed to take any action against the accused.
