Driver beats woman to death, husband hurt
Kolkata: A woman died and her husband is at present critical at the hospital after their driver beat them up badly on Monday at Khoshbagan in East Burdwan. According to local residents, Subrata Nag (70) was an anesthetist and used to live at his house in Khosbagan with his wife Mousumi Nag (60).
Their son lives in USA for his work.
To look after them the Nag family had engaged a woman identified as Jaba Pramanik who stays at the same house. The accused person, Tapan Das, was engaged as a driver 20 years ago.
A few months ago, before Durga Puja, he demanded his salary in advance which the doctor had refused. It is alleged that then Das had misbehaved with him and thus Subrata sacked him.
Later, Das reportedly apologised and Subrata again employed him. On Monday afternoon, Das knocked the door of Nag family's house.
After Mousumi opened the door, he allegedly demanded three month's salary in advance. When Mousumi told Das that it is was possible to give him salary in advance, Das allegedly started misbehaving with her. He also threatened Mousumi telling that he would leave the job unless Das gets his three months salary in advance.
Following this Mousumi reportedly told Das to go away immediately and told him not to come from Tuesday.
Hearing this, Das brought a stick and started beating up Mousumi. Hearing his wife screaming for help, Subrata came downstairs and tried to stop Das who attacked Subrata as well.
When Pramanik came downstairs, Das threatened her and forced her to go upstairs and locked her on the roof. Again he went downstairs and kept on beating the Nag couple.
To seek help, Pramanik called up some of her acquaintances and informed about the situation.
They informed police who rushed to the spot.
Meanwhile, locals managed to detain Das and rushed the Nag couple to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital where Mousumi was declared brought dead. Later, Das was handed over to police.
