Demolition work of Majerhat bridge crawls to halt as machine develops snag

Kolkata: The demolition work of Majerhat bridge suffered a major setback, with the jaw-cutter machine developing a technical snag on Monday afternoon. The machine was brought from Mumbai for undertaking the work of pulling down the damaged portion of the bridge. It had started operation from September 28.

"The machine has developed a technical problem and we need specialised engineers for repairing it. It may take a few days in the process," said an engineer working at the site. The work is being carried out under the supervision of the Public Works Department.

Engineers from Edifice Engineering in Mumbai had bagged the contract for the demolition of the bridge that had caved in on September 4. It was decided that initially only four spans on top of the bridge will be razed that covers the railway tracks, the Chetla boat canal and the under-construction Majerhat Metro Station. A major portion of the earmarked part has already been pulled down.
