Dead puppies inside NRS: Authorities set up 3-member committee to probe incident

Kolkata: NRS Medical College and Hospital authorities have assured stringent action against anyone from the hospital if found involved in the killing of 16 puppies.

The preliminary report of autopsy on Monday suggests the puppies were beaten to death. A video that went viral on Sunday night corroborated the fact and showed two women hitting the puppies with an iron rod. The incident had taken place near the nurses' hostel inside the hospital campus.

Earlier, it was suspected that the puppies might have poisoned to death as food was found inside the plastic bag that contained the dead puppies. Some have, however, alleged that a few nursing staff of the hospital may be behind the attack. Two puppies and a dog have been undergoing treatment at a veterinary hospital in Belgachia.

A separate probe has been initiated by the city police and a case against some unknown persons has been lodged. According to sources, it was learnt that autopsy report hints towards excessive bleeding being a cause for the death. Some of the dead puppies had their heads broken while some others had their spinal cord fractured.

The NRS Hospital authorities have formed a three-member committee to probe into the incident.

The hospital authorities said nobody will be spared and action will be taken against the guilty. The committee is looking at the footages from the CCTVs installed inside the hospital premises.

Many animal activists who rushed to the spot have raised their voice and questioned why the people who had shot the video did not step up and protest against the incident.

Timely intervention would have saved the 16 puppies, said the animal activists.

A senior police officer said if proven guilty, the accused may be imprisoned for up to 5 years.

According to the preliminary investigation, police suspect that apart from the two women identified from the nursing hostel, others may also be involved in

the incident.
