Cyclist run over by speeding truck in Bishnupur

Kolkata: A 23-year-old youth was killed after being hit by a speeding truck. The incident took place at South 24-Parganas' Bishnupur on Tuesday morning.

The victim has been identified as Raja Das (23). Police said Das was cycling along the National Highway 117 when the accident occurred. The victim used to be a resident of Amtala, the same district where he was trying to cross the road when a truck knocked him down.

Some locals rushed to the spot and found the victim lying in a pool of blood. They took the victim to a nearby hospital where the doctors pronounced him brought dead. The incident triggered tension among the locals.

There was some traffic congestion along NH-117 following the incident.

The locals staged a demonstration at the accident site protesting against the rash driving of vehicles particularly early in the morning. Police reached the spot and brought the situation under

control.

The locals alleged that accidents often take place in the area during night or in the morning hours when the vehicles ply through the area at top speed and there is no surveillance to nab the errant drivers.

According to police, the victim was going to his work on his bicycle at around 7 am when a speeding truck hit him from behind.

The victim fell at a distance. The truck driver fled the spot along with the vehicle immediately after

the accident.
