Culprit was socket bomb, say police
Kolkata: Barrackpore Police has claimed that a socket bomb was used in the blast at Kajipara near Nagerbazar on Tuesday. The blast took place near Jessore Road at around 9 am.
Soon, all the senior officers of Barrackpore Police, along with the Commissioner Rajesh Kumar Singh, reached the spot. According to Singh, a low intensity socket bomb was used for the blast.
According to the police, several splinters were found from the blast spot. A bag was also seized by the police. Sleuths claimed that no Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was found.
However, sources informed that seeing the nature and intensity of the blast, it is suspected that an explosive like IEDs might have been used. Police informed that no detonator was found.
On Tuesday, Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) from the (CID) visited the spot and found several splinters and metal objects scattered at the blast spot.
Experts from the Forensic Science Laboratory also visited the spot and collected samples for examination.
Singh later said: "It was a low intensity socket bomb. We are investigating further to identify who kept it. There was only one bomb there. Several splinters were recovered from the spot. A bag and some other things were seized. Anything more can be said only after detailed investigation. We are also waiting for the forensic report."
According to police sources, CID officials and forensic experts have found no trace of gun powder at the blast spot. But the bomb squad was able to detect that ammonium nitrate was used to manufacture the bomb.
The chairman of South Dum Dum Municipality has pointed his finger towards BJP, claiming that this might have been an attempt to kill him and other Trinamool workers. Interestingly, Roy remains present in the party office near the blast spot on Sundays and Tuesdays. He reaches his office within 9 am.
However, on Tuesday, he somehow got late. He arrived at the spot after five minutes. He alleged that BJP has conspired to kill Trinamool workers.
"As the bandh called by BJP was foiled, they are trying to infiltrate the area. I assume
that I was a target of them. This is part of a conspiracy," said Roy.
State Food and Supplies minister Jyotipriya Mallick has also accused BJP of being the conspirator behind the blast. "The chairman was their target. A few days ago, Dilip Ghosh had threatened to beat up Trinamool supporters during a meeting at Surer Math in Dum Dum. We do not believe in such politics," he said.
