KOLKATA: The Post Graduate (PG) examinations of Calcutta University will be soon shifted from the colleges' home campus. A meeting between the top brass of CU along with the departmental heads of several colleges having Post Graduate courses have agreed on such a proposal that came up in the discussion on Thursday.

"The decision has been taken to ensure that there is no compromise with the standard of education and usher in transparency in the system," said Sonali Chakravarti Banerjee, Vice-Chancellor of CU.

There are as many as 39 colleges under the varsity that have Post Graduate courses. These colleges will be brought under one umbrella and there will be a common examination. Apart from the V-C, the acting registrar of CU and pro Vice-Chancellor (academic) Dipak Kar was present at the meeting.

"We have decided on a common examination as well as a uniform syllabus for all the colleges. The answer scripts will be examined not by the home college but by teachers from other colleges," a senior CU academic official who attended the meeting said. It has been decided that all practical examinations for PG would be held between January 2 and 22. A Board of Studies for PG will be formed to set the question papers. There will be five members each for a single subject in this Board of Studies and one member will be selected to frame the question papers.

The tenure for such a committee will be of two years following which different colleges, on a rotational basis, will be selected to be a part of the committee. There are 28 subjects that are taught at the PG level at CU.
