Crimes against women: Top cop tells officers to act tough

Kolkata: A day when the police arrested a minor in connection with alleged abduction and sexual assault on two minor girls at Kalighat in South Kolkata, Kolkata Police Commissioner Anuj Sharma directed officers in charge of all police stations to act tough against any sort of violence against women.

Incidentally, the Commissioner's prod also coincides with the gang-rape and murder of an aspiring 27-year-old veterinary doctor at Hyderabad that had raised concerns over women safety.

Sources in the Kolkata Police said that Sharma has instructed police officers to initiate proceedings immediately after compliant of any sort of women violence and take strong action against the offender as per law.

Sharma posted on his Facebook page urging women to dial toll free numbers of Kolkata Police — 100 or 1090 or 1091 or 112 — in case of any emergency or any doubt regarding their safety.

The minor is third to arrested in connection with the Kalighat incident, when two minor girls residing on the footpath in front of Kalighat temple were abducted by the three accused persons, known to them and sexually assaulted them near an ashram on the bank of Adi Ganga.

The minor who was arrested on Saturday is a resident of Kalighat area and was hiding in the residence of one of his relatives after committing the crime.

Police sources informed that the two girls were lured by the trio with the promise of offering them money against helping them to cut the soil on the banks of Adi Ganga.
