Couple ends life after jumping in front of train

A couple committed suicide by jumping in front of a train at Belur railway station in Hooghly on Wednesday evening.

Police said the victim Biswajit Saha (40) and his wife Sushama Saha (35) were residents of Serampore in Hooghly.

Biswajit used to work in a pathological laboratory at Belur and his wife used to work in a nursing home situated close to Uttarpara railway station.

She took a train from Uttarpara and crossed one station in between to reach Belur where her husband was supposed to wait after leaving his office.

Police spoke to the local people and went through the call lists of both the victims. Preliminary investigation revealed that Sushama didn't find her husband when she reached Belur railway station and called him up. He turned up to Belur Station within a few minutes and he told Sushama that he got delayed because of some work in his pathological centre.

When they were waiting for a train to come in which they would go home, Biswajit received a call on his cell phone. He spoke to the caller for a few minutes and subsequently there was heated exchange of words between them.

Suddenly, Sushama ran towards the track where a Bally station-bound Burdwan suburban train was about to pass and jumped on the tracks. Finding his wife running towards the track, Biswajit ran after her.

But Sushama jumped on to the tracks before Biswajit could stop her. Finding no other way to save his wife, Biswajit too jumped on to the tracks and the train ran them over.

According to the people who witnessed the entire thing, the incident took place within a fraction of seconds and the motorman of the train had no scope to apply the brakes. It happened before the people standing on the platform could understand what was going on.
