Couple commits suicide, family feud suspected

A couple committed suicide by hanging themselves from the ceiling fan in a room of their house at Katwa in East Midnapore late night on Saturday.

Police said that the deceased were identified as Buddhadeb Mondal and his wife Jhuma Mondal.

The police are yet to ascertain the exact reason which had forced the couple to kill themselves but suspect that there might be a family feud behind the incident.

Their 12-year-old son was with his grandmother. On Sunday morning he went to the adjacent room and found both his mother and father hanging from the ceiling fan.

His grandmother came running hearing the boy's cries for help. She informed the local people who brought both the bodies down. By the time the police were also informed and they reached the spot. They took both of the bodies to the hospital where they were declared brought dead. The bodies were sent for an autopsy.

Police initiated a probe in this connection. A police officer said that they are looking into all possibilities that might have led to the death of the couple.

The police came to know from the neighbours that they had heard them quarrelling. Their family members told the police that they did not find anything unusual in their behaviour on Saturday night.

Police also came to know that they had left their original house a few months ago and had stayed in a rented house for some days.

But they returned to their house again recently. The police are trying to find the reason which had prompted them to leave their original house and stay in a rented one in an adjacent locality.

Though the possibility is very less, the police are also trying to find whether the husband had committed suicide after killing his wife.
