Cops size 8 pistols & more than Rs 1 cr, arrest two

Kolkata: The Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata Police has seized eight country made pistols and arrested two notorious arms dealers from Strand Road on Monday night.

The STF has also seized more than Rs one crore from a house of Elliot Road on Monday.

According to police, on Monday evening STF officials were tipped off about two arms dealers who would pass through Strand Road on a bike at night with few illegal arms. Acting on the tip off, cops started keeping a vigil on Strand Road under jurisdiction of South Port police station.

Around 8:20 pm, cops spotted the bike and compelled the riders identified as Sujato Goswami and Md. Sahid of Serampore in Hooghly to stop. During search police found eight country-made improvised pistols from their possession.

They were taken to Lalbazar along with the pistols and there a case was initiated against the duo on charges of criminal conspiracy along with relevant sections of the Arms Act. Later they were arrested. The duo was produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's court on Tuesday following which they were remanded to STF custody till October 28.

In a separate case, a STF team acting on a tip off conducted a raid at the house of Md. Imran Khan located on Elliot Road on Monday. During search of his house, STF found around Rs 1.6 crore along with some gold jewelry, two laptops and two smartphones. The family members of Khan failed to provide satisfactory answers regarding the money and other objects. Though police have seized the unaccounted money and other objects, Khan was not at home at the time of raid.

Deputy Commissioner of the STF, Aparajita Rai informed that a suo motu case has been initiated against Khan and steps are being taken to arrest him.
