Cops come to aid of migrant workers stuck in Nagaland

Kolkata: The Purulia District Police's timely intervention has saved the lives of five migrant labourers who ran out of ration while they were stuck in Nagaland amid the prevailing lockdown across the country.

The district police got in touch with their counterparts in Nagaland and ration in the form of rice, pulses, potatoes, oil, salt have been provided to the daily labourers.

The five labourers who hail from Vikhari Cheliama village, a remote place at the foot of the Dalma range under Barabazar police station has been working as day labourers at Mon district under Naginimora police station area in Nagaland for the last few months.

They are in the job of breaking stone and are staying inside tarpaulins on the bank of the river Lakshmi.

They somehow managed to procure food from the little money they had earned against their work. But on Sunday, they found themselves in a helpless condition as their food stock got exhausted. They then called up the control room number of Purulia district police and narrated their plight.

Consequently, the control room contacted the Inspector in Charge of Barabazar police station Sougata Ghosh who immediately got in touch with senior police officials of the district.

Ghosh who has served in the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) a long time in his career had been to Nagaland on more than one occasion.

His contacts there helped him and he soon got in touch with his counterpart at Mon police station. He also called up the Deputy Commissioner who is in charge of Mon district.

The latter took prompt action and instructed the local police to do the needful.

"Officials of Nagaland Police has got back to us and told us that they have solved the issues of the migrant labourers and have provided with food and other essentials that will last for at least four weeks," said a senior police officer of Purulia district.

He added that the state government is committed to extending help to the migrant labourers who are stuck in different states of the country.
