Condition of 2 patients critical among 11 undergoing treatment in two city hospitals

Kolkata: A day after the Majherhat Bridge collapsed, seven persons are undergoing treatment at SSKM Hospital with various injuries in their bodies, while four are at a private hospital in Ekbalpore. One patient from each hospital is stated to be in serious condition.

Minister of state for Health Chandrima Bhattacharya on Wednesday visited SSKM Hospital to monitor the situation. She instructed the senior officials of the hospital to take all possible steps to ensure that the injured victims get the best health services.

"I have met the injured victims. All of them are stable. One has been kept in the ITU as his injuries are serious. The hospital authorities have taken all measures to provide the best services to the injured victims," Bhattacharya said on Wednesday.

It may be mentioned here that Bhattacharya had also visited the hospital on the day of the incident, following the instruction of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who was in North Bengal at the time. The Health department has also asked the hospital to arrange extra beds in the emergency ward. Following an instruction from the department, SSKM authorities also deployed adequate number of doctors, nurses and health workers in the emergency ward, in order to tackle the crisis.

A senior Health department official on Wednesday said: "We have made necessary arrangements at all the medical colleges in the city to cope with the situation. SSKM Hospital has handled the situation with utmost sensitivity."

It may be mentioned here that one Nazrul Ali Mollah (65) has been kept in the ITU of the hospital as his condition is serious. According to the sources in the hospital, two out of the seven patients undergoing treatment at SSKM may soon be released, as their health condition has improved significantly. Five persons have so far been released from the hospital till Wednesday evening.

It has been learnt that among the four patients who are undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Ekbalpore, one is stated to be in critical condition. As per the hospital sources, Papai Roy (26) has sustained critical injuries and has been kept in ventilation support.

The others are Jamil Hanif (55), Anupam Sahoo (45) and Subrata Ghosh (59). Ghosh has suffered facial injury while Sahoo has received spinal trauma. Hanif has suffered pelvic trauma after the accident, hospital sources said.
