College eyes to make easy money from students

Kolkata: At a time, when Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is extending maximum help towards the students so that they can carry on with their studies by providing them with scholarships and other facilities, Bijoy Krishna Girls' College in Howrah is asking its students to pay Rs 500 to get undergraduate certificates from the college flouting all norms.

The notice issued by Principal Ruma Bhattacharya on July 18 read those students who had passed between 2012- 2016 and want the CU pass certificates urgently will have to deposit Rs 500 to get the certificates within three days. Similarly, those who had passed out from the college in 2011 and before can get urgent copies by paying Rs 500 and Rs 300 to get certificates by usual course. The certificates are required by those who have got government or private sector jobs. As graduation certificates are not issued by the Calcutta University along with the mark sheet, many students do not take the certificates.

However, as the original certificates are required to be produced at the time of interviews, students run from the pillar to post to get their graduation certificates from colleges where used to study many years ago.

Taking advantage of the situation, the college authorities decided to issue them against a payment.

The matter created a flutter among the former students and the authorities withdrew the order on Monday evening. The matter has been brought to the notice of Partha Chatterjee, state Education minister, who is looking into the matter.
