CM bats for equal rights for all on Int'l Day of Tolerance

Kolkata: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urged people on the International Day of Tolerance to "redeem our pledge to uphold the Constitution of India that grants equal rights to every citizen."

On Friday, she tweeted: "On #InternationalDayforTolerance, let us redeem our pledge to uphold the #Constitution of India that grants equal rights to every citizen".

It may be mentioned that the Chief Minister has repeatedly raised her voice demanding equal rights for every citizen and she had also criticised the role of the Centre when many people fell victim to "intolerance" in different parts of the country.

Banerjee also tweeted on the National Press Day. Sending best wishes to all journalists on National Press Day, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has stated that the Media is the fourth pillar of democracy and must always report the truth.

In a tweet on Friday, the Chief Minister has stated: "On the occasion of #NationalPressDay, my best wishes to all #journalists. The #media is the fourth pillar of #democracy and must always report the truth." She has further stated in the tweet: "May these words inspire you - Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high..."

It may be mentioned that the Chief Minister had earlier attacked the Centre on several occasions, stating that "media was not allowed to work freely".

In Bengal, the Chief Minister has introduced the Maavoi health scheme for journalists. Under the scheme, journalists along with their dependent family members can avail health care facilities.

Moreover, in March, the Mamata Banerjee government had issued a notification to give pension to journalists above 60 years in age under the West Bengal Pension Scheme for Journalists, 2018. It had fulfilled an expectation that was lying unnoticed for a long time. The state government had taken the decision to give pension to journalists above 60 years as a mark of "respect and responsibility of the state towards democracy".
