A civic volunteer has been accused of beating up a biker with a helmet after the latter allegedly violated traffic norms.
A traffic police sergeant who was at the spot at the time of incident didn't stop the accused civil volunteer from beating up the person. The incident occurred at Muchipara area of Durgapur on Thursday morning. The incident had triggered resentment among the local residents some of whom have captured the video of the incident and circulated it in the social media.
The district administration has ordered a probe into the incident. It was learnt that the victim was riding a motorcycle without a helmet. The accused civic volunteer stopped his way at Muchipara. He asked the biker as to why he did not wear a helmet. As the biker failed to give any satisfactory answer, the civic volunteer started heckling him. The biker was asked to show his papers.
The incident triggered a heated altercation between the biker and the accused civic volunteer. Some of the local residents alleged that a traffic police sergeant who was standing nearby did not intervene when the accused started hitting the victim with a helmet. The local people rushed the spot and rescued the victim but the police officer remained unmoved and kept watching the incident from a distance, alleged local people. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital as he had received severe injuries on his head.
The local residents staged a demonstration at Muchipara area protesting against the misbehavior of the civic volunteer and the police inaction. The local residents alleged that the accused hurled abuses at the victim when an altercation broke out between the two. The accused, however, defended his activities by saying that the biker flouted the traffic norms.
There was confusion among the police over jurisdiction and it was difficult to ascertain whether the area falls under the Coke Oven police station or the New Township police station. The video that has already been circulated in social networking sites has created a sensation among public. It has also brought embarrassment for the police. A senior district administrative official has ordered a probe in this regard and action would be taken against those who will be found guilty, the official said.
