Civic volunteer arrested for sexually assaulting minor

Kolkata: A minor girl was sexually harassed by one of her relatives, who is also a civic volunteer, in Lake Town area. On Wednesday, the victim's father lodged a complaint with the Lake Town police station and the accused was arrested promptly.

According to sources, the minor girl was sexually abused for the past few months by her uncle. It is alleged that the accused had threatened the victim with dire consequences if she revealed anything about him to her family members.

On Wednesday, she was again sexually harassed after which she came back home crying uncontrollably. Out of grave concern, her parents asked her what had gone wrong that she was sobbing so badly.

Though primarily she tried to hide, but later the girl narrated the whole incident to her parents.

Immediately, her father lodged a complaint against his cousin brother who lives in the same vicinity.

The accused was immediately arrested on charges of committing rape under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 6 of the Prevention Of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act). The victim girl has been sent to a hospital for medical examination.

The civic volunteer tried to exert his influence when the cops went to his house to arrest him. However, he was overpowered by the police and eventually arrested. He has been sent to three days' police custody.
