Civic body initiates steps to shorten travel time to Behala
Kolkata: The connectivity between Behala and south Kolkata will receive a boost with Tolly Club and Wakf Board agreeing to give a portion of their land for widening of road.
A portion of boundary wall of Tolly Club will shift 2.5 m for the expansion of road to facilitate travel from Behala to south Kolkata. There have been several meetings on the part of the KMC, the Tolly Club and the Wakf Board authorities in the recent past to resolve the issue which was posing an impediment in widening of the road.
The construction of the new road will start from the junction of Deshapran Sasmal Road. The connecting road on either side of the bridge over Tolly Nullah will also be widened by KMC. This will help the small vehicles avoid Tollygunge Circular Road and MG Road to travel to and fro from Behala. The congestion will be reduced and travelling time will come down drastically.
With the widening of the road a vehicle can take DPS Road just opposite of Prince Anwar Shah Road and then travel across Kaliprasanna Lane and Ijatullah Lane cross the APJ Abdul Kalam bridge on Tolly Nullah canal and then take Canal Road, Basantalal Saha Road, Rai Bahadur Road to reach Behala.
Presently vehicles have to travel across Tollygunge Circular Road and Tollygunge Phari or travel across MG Road and then pass over Karunamoyee bridge to travel towards south Kolkata and due to narrow roads the time taken is reasonably high.
Recently the KMC has shifted the hutments on Canal Road to an apartment constructed under Banglar Bari scheme. The state government has allocated Rs 4 crores to the KMC for the widening of Basantalal Saha Road.
