The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) Kolkata has predicted rainfall on Saturday and Sunday in the city. Showers may also occur in Gangetic South Bengal as well as in parts of North Bengal.
A deep depression on the Gangetic South Bengal, which would extend up to South Odisha, would result in this rainfall — the RMC Kolkata predicted. The weather scientists forecast that the depression would create steam, which would turn into rainfall. However, this would be pre-monsoon rainfall, the experts at RMC believe.
"In Bengal, we receive above-normal rainfall in June and July. The north-eastern states are likely to face the risk of floods at that time. But the rainfall which we have predicted on Saturday and Sunday in Kolkata is normal. It is pre-monsoon rainfall," an RMC Kolkata official said.
Meanwhile, hot and humid conditions were felt in Kolkata on Friday. The highest temperature of the day was 32.1 degrees Celsius and the lowest temperature was 21.6 degrees Celsius. Morning walkers felt a chilly breeze and the weather was not so hot early in the morning. However, it only persisted till 8 am.
While the northern part of the city is likely to receive slightly excessive rainfall, the southern part would receive only normal rainfall, the weathermen predicted.
However, residents of Kolkata should not worry about rainfall, informed RMC. "We predicted rainfall on Saturday and Sunday. There is a high chance that rainfall would occur in the morning," said Ganesh Kumar Das, director of RMC Kolkata.
"It is really hot and humid out here in Kolkata. We recently had two days of rainfall. It would not be bad if it extends another two days," said a city-based salesman. It seems like Kolkata denizens are in the mood to welcome a heavy shower.
It may be mentioned that monsoon has not been very active over Gangetic West Bengal in the recent past. As of now, Kolkata may receive scattered rainfalls in the next 24 hours. Recently, the RMC recorded 80 mm rainfall in Kolkata, which was an all time record in spring in the last 10 years.
Almost a decade ago, the month of March recorded 35.2 mm rainfall, which was highest in the record of RMC Kolkata. But double rainfall was already recorded in March 8 and 9. "This is a different spring," said a Salt Lake resident.
