Kolkata: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will be visiting Delhi for a three-day trip from May 1 to take part in discussions regarding programme schedules to observe 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The event will be chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
With the year 2019 marking the 150th birth anniversary of Gandhi, in a recent notification, the formation of a national-level committee for the year-long celebrations was issued.
The committee will be chaired by the Prime Minister and will include all the Chief Ministers, Gandhians and institutional representatives.
Meanwhile, it may be mentioned that the Bengal government has set up a committee to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi across the state. A 46-member committee has been constituted with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as its Chairperson. The committee has taken certain decisions on its first meeting held last Monday.
It has decided to organise a programme at Gandhi Bhavan on October 2. Essay competitions will be held in various schools on the philosophy of Gandhiji. Steps have been taken to spread the message of Gandhi among people. A booklet called "Father of the Nation" containing speeches of Gandhi on different issues like communal harmony, national integration and patriotism, will also be published.
The state government has also decided to place a permanent chair in the name of Gandhiji in Calcutta University.
The government will carry out proper renovation works at Beliaghata's Gandhi Bhavan maintaining the heritage statuesque of the structure.
