Cases of mass resignation rise, strike intensifies despite all assurances

Kolkata: Over 800 doctors in various hospitals and medical colleges in the state have tendered their resignation so far showing solidarity with the junior doctors continuing cease–work for five consecutive days at NRS Medical College and Hospital.

An unprecedented incident of mass resignation might lead to a complete collapse of the health services in the state, if it goes on unabated, apprehends the doctors' fraternity in the city.

It was learnt that around 24 doctors from Burdwan Medical College and Hospital submitted their resignation to the competent authority while as many as 34 doctors from Kalyani JNM Hospital also resigned on Saturday. Around 10 doctors from Midnapore Medical College and Hospital also put in their papers.

Around 36 more doctors from Burdwan Medical College and Hospital expressed their desire to resign. A senior official of the Burdwan Medical College and Hospital said some doctors were putting in their papers on the ground of inadequate security arrangements in the hospitals.

It may be mentioned here that junior doctors at NRS Medical College and Hospital intensified the stir, despite all assurances extended by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her government. The agitation of the junior doctors had gained momentum after some senior doctors from various hospitals came out in their support. The demands of the junior doctors resonated amongst some senior doctors of various hospitals who too demanded security enhancement at the hospital premises. It can be stated that the principal and vice-principal at NRS Medical College and Hospital had resigned on Thursday. Around 21 senior doctors at the College of Medicine and Sagore Dutta Hospital on BT Road resigned on the same day. On Friday, 107 doctors at RG Kar Medical College resigned. In addition to this, 100 doctors from Calcutta Medical College & Hospital, 175 from SSKM, 16 from Calcutta National Medical College, 100 from NRS Medical College and Hospital and 33 from the School of Tropical Medicine also tendered their resignation.
