Darjeeling: The carcass of an elephant was recovered from the Bangdubi block, Bagdogra Forest Range near Siliguri on Friday.
Locals spotted the tusker near the road leading to the Tipukhola picnic spot and informed the forest officials. Personnel from the forest department arrived and recovered the body. A post mortem was also conducted.
Forest personnel said the carcass was of a male elephant around 10 years of age. They ruled out poaching as the body did not bear any external injury mark. The tusks were also intact.
"It could have died due to blood dysentery and dehydration. However, the cause will be clear only after we receive the post mortem report," stated TT Bhutia, Range Officer.
