Calcutta Medical College doctors reconstruct cancer patient's nose

Kolkata: The Calcutta Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) recently reconstructed the nose of an elderly patient after it developed cancer.

The patient, Chandu Ghosh, a resident of Mayapur in Nadia had been suffering from cancer in his nose.

Initially, he consulted some local doctors after a wound inside his nose did not get healed for a long time.

As local doctors failed to cure the wound, the elderly patient visited the outdoor department of the CMCH a few months ago. Doctors at Calcutta Medical College and Hospital found through various clinical tests that Ghosh had been suffering from cancer inside his nose. They also found a tumour between the cartilage and a bone.

The ENT doctors at the hospital after a thorough examination, decided to conduct a surgery in his nose to remove the tumour. Moreover, the doctors also felt the need of reconstruction of his nose.

According to the doctors removing the tumour was not a difficult task but reconstruction of nose was challenging for them. During the surgery, the doctors removed the tumour following which a vacuum had been created. The doctors then decide to reconstruct the nose with flesh and blood vessels from his forehead.

The doctors in the hospital claimed that this is for the first time nose reconstruction has been constructed any a government hospital in the state.

The biopsy report confirmed that the cancer in the patient's nose was cured. The patient is being given post operative care. He is recovering well, doctors said. It was learnt that the patient would be released from the hospital very soon.
