Bus hits three in Purulia, minor killed

Kolkata: A minor girl was killed and two others injured in a road accident that took place in Purulia on Sunday. The local people put up a road block following the incident.

The deceased has been identified as Sangita Kalindi (7), while the injured persons are Sukhda Kalindi (62) and Subhojit Kalindi (4). The injured victims were taken to the Chakoltod Block Primary Health Centre in the district. Subhojit is stated to be in serious condition.

Police said that Sukhda, an elderly woman and a resident of Chakoltod village, had been taking her granddaughter and grandson to a nearby marketplace at around 9.30 am, when a Purulia bound private bus hit them.

Sangita, who received fatal injuries in the accident, was declared brought dead in the nearby health centre. The bus driver fled from the spot along with the vehicle, immediately after the accident. The local people rushed to the spot and took the victims to the health centre.

An irate mob put up a road block, protesting against the rash driving of vehicles along Purulia-Manbazar state highway, where the accident occurred. The incident led to traffic congestion in the area, with many vehicles getting stranded on the road for a long time.

Senior police officers in the district went to the spot and tried to pacify the mob. The local residents staged a demonstration in front of the police officers.

They alleged that overloaded vehicles often ply through the area, causing frequent accidents. The police officers assured that the bus driver would soon be arrested and surveillance would be conducted to crack down on the vehicles that are flouting traffic norms. Normalcy was restored around two hours later. Raids are being conducted to nab the bus driver.
