Brothers accused of forcefully 'sharing' wife, arrested

Kolkata: A housewife residing in a posh apartment at Ballygunge Park in South Kolkata has alleged sexual abuse against her husband and brother-in-law.

The woman's complaint at Karaya police station stated that her husband had committed forceful intercourse with her and was compelled to be sexually abused by her elder brother-in-law several times, on the context of 'sharing' wife between brothers in the family. Karaya police station has arrested the complainant's husband and her brother-in-law.

"We have arrested the two persons named in the FIR — Suranjan Sen who is the complainant's husband and his elder brother Nilanjan Sen from their residence on the third floor of 8, Ballygunge Park. The police team that went to their residence to arrest faced vehement resistance from the family members of the two accused persons and were beaten up," a senior official of Kolkata Police said.

The sleuths have registered two separate cases in connection with the incident. The first of sexual assault as per the allegations of the housewife and the second one was of assaulting a police team when they went to arrest. The arrested duo were produced before Alipore court on Friday and are being remanded to police custody till January 7.

The complainant has also alleged of physical and mental torture at the mentioned residence by her husband and other in-laws for more dowry and also misappropriated her stridhan articles. Police sources informed that the woman who originally hails from Chetla had gone to her matrimonial house on Thursday evening following which she lodged the complaint of sexual abuse.

"We will interrogate the family members of the two arrested persons and their neighbours and also the victim's family for further leads in the case," an investigating officer from Karaya police station said. One of the victim's family members, however, alleged that the complainant was living separately for the last

seven months.

"The marriage took place fifteen years back and there have been no allegations. The complainant was having an illicit relationship which we did not approve. We were planning to file a divorce suit and they have been falsely implicated. It is her attempt to malign our family that has a reputation," the victim's father-in-law said. "Arresting somebody does not tantamount to any offence. The matter is subjudice and our lawyer will take it up in court. The allegations are baseless," he added.
