Body of housewife found hanging at in-laws' house

Kolkata: Mystery shrouds the death of a housewife whose body was found hanging from the ceiling at her in-laws' house in North 24-Parganas' Swarupnagar on Tuesday morning.

The victim has been identified Parul Sarkar (26). The family members of the victim alleged that she had been murdered. On the basis of the specific complaint lodged by her family members, North 24-Parganas police have started a probe and detained the victim's husband and mother-in-law. The incident occurred in the Nirman area under Swarupnagar police station in Basirhat.

Locals found the victim hanging and reported the matter to the police.

They rushed to the spot and recovered the body. Police later sent the body for an autopsy.

On the basis of the complaint, police have detained the victim's husband, Hemanta Sarkar and mother-in-law, Kanan Sarkar.

They are being interrogated in this connection. The family members of the victim told police that the deceased was subjected to both mental and physical torture at her in-laws' house. The victim's parents alleged that they used to pressurise the woman

for dowry.

Her family members were informed about the incident by the locals on Tuesday morning. The family members said the victim had deep injury marks around her neck that suggest she might have been strangulated and later the body was kept hanging. The victim had been staying at her in-laws' house for more than two years. She was declared brought dead after being taken to a nearby hospital on Saturday night. Police reached the spot and started a probe.

The investigating officers are waiting for the post-mortem report that can throw some light on her death.

Police are also interrogating the locals in this connection. Police are yet to confirm the exact reason behind her death.
