Body of housewife found at in-laws' residence
Kolkata: Mystery shrouds the death of a 28-year-old housewife whose body was found hanging from the ceiling at her in-laws' house at Shanti Nagar village of Jamuria in West Burdwan on Friday morning.
The incident triggered tension among the locals. Police said the victim, Chaitali Dey was found hanging by some locals.
She was declared brought dead by the doctors after being taken to a nearby hospital.
Police are yet to confirm if the victim had committed suicide or there was any foul play behind the incident. The family members of the deceased have lodged a complaint with the police saying the woman was strangled to death by her husband and his family members and the body was later put in such a manner so that it appears to be a case of suicide.
According to the victim's family members, the woman was subjected to both mental and physical torture at her in-laws' house as she refused to meet the demands of her husband who pressured her for money.
As per the preliminary investigation, police came to know that the victim, a resident of an adjacent village, Madanpur, got married to one Kalyan Dey of Shakti Nagar village around six years ago. The couple has two daughters.
The family members of the victim told police her husband attempted to kill her by setting her on fire a couple of years ago.
Around three months ago, the accused husband beat up the victim and she received injuries on one of
her ears.
Following the incident, the woman went to her paternal house where she was undergoing treatment.
On November 12, the husband went to her paternal house and brought her back after convincing them that she would not be tortured any more. The victim's father told police he talked to his daughter for the last time on last Wednesday.
On Friday morning, he was informed that she had committed suicide.
Police have sent the victim's body to Asansol district hospital for an autopsy which might throw some light on the woman's death.
The victim's husband and his family members are absconding since the incident occurred. Police are conducting raids to nab the husband.
