Bodies of young couple found hanging from tree

Kolkata: Mystery shrouds the death of a 19-year-old girl and her boyfriend whose bodies were found hanging from a tree inside a mango grove at Sagardighi in Murshidabad on Wednesday morning.

According to the preliminary investigation, police suspect the couple might have committed suicide after their family members objected to their marriage. Police have, however, started a detailed probe in this regard to look into the exact cause of the incident.

The victims have been identified as Surajit Das (21) and Supriya Das (19). Both of them were the residents of Dohal village under Sagardighi police station. It was learnt that the couple had developed a relationship two years ago but their family members did not give consent for marriage.

Both the youth and the girl expressed their wish to get married to each other.

The youth's father Budhhadeb Das, however, told police they had no objection to the marriage but the girl's family was against it.

Das also said the family members of the girl were mounting pressure on her to get married elsewhere. The girl has been under tremendous mental pressure for the past few months.

Police said both the victims left their houses on Tuesday evening and did not return. The family members started a search operation in the adjoining areas but failed to trace them. On early Wednesday morning, some locals spotted the victims hanging from a tree. They reported the matter to the local police station who rushed to the spot. The bodies were recovered and sent for an autopsy. The investigating officers are waiting for the report which might throw some light on the cause

of their death.

Police are also investigating if there was any foul play behind their death. They are interrogating the family members of both the victims.
