Kolkata: Mystery shrouds the death of a 32-year-old woman and her-one-and-half-year old daughter whose bodies were found inside their house in Baranagar on Tuesday night.
The victim woman, Soma Bhowmik, was found lying on her bed with her throat slit, while her daughter had a cut injury on her right wrist. The girl was found in the adjacent room. The incident took place when the woman's husband, Subhajit was away from home. Both the victims were declared dead by doctors.
Police said Subhajit, an employee of a private company, had returned home from office at around 10 pm on Tuesday and found that the front gate of the house open.
As he entered the bed room, he found that his wife was lying on the bed with injuries around her neck and the daughter on the floor of an adjacent room. After being alerted by the screams of Bhowmik, locals rushed to the spot and informed the local police station.
The victims were taken to a nearby hospital where the doctors pronounced them brought dead. The doctors have confirmed that both the victims have died in the afternoon. Police are waiting for the autopsy report that might throw some light on the nature of their deaths.
According to a preliminary investigation, police suspect that the woman might have committed suicide by slitting her throat after killing her daughter.
