BMC official prevented from spraying dengue oil, resident held
Kolkata: A Salt Lake resident/owner was arrested for obstructing an employee of Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation while he was conducting a dengue drive within his residential premises on Monday morning.
According to an officer of Bidhannagar South Police station, the worker, Ashim Sarkar, had gone to the house of Vinit Agarwal at GD 308 in Salt Lake for spraying mosquito oil as per the daily schedule. But Agarwal tried to prevent him from carrying out his duties and hurled abuses at Sarkar. When he protested, Sarkar was assaulted and received severe injuries on his head. He was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment.
When the ward assistant Bapi Mukherjee rushed to the spot hearing the incident he was also abused by Agarwal.
Mukherjee lodged a complaint with Bidhannagar South Police station and Agarwal was arrested.
In another incident, the Lake Town police arrested a criminal on charges of trying to extort money from a bus owner and assaulting some of his bus drivers on purpose for the same. According to police sources, on August 23, a local criminal, Goutam Baral alias Gedu, had called the bus owner Asim Guha of route 12C and demanded extortion money and threatened to kill him. The next day, one of his associates Gouranga Baral alias Buro, visited the bus depot at Dum Dum park and demanded the extortion money from he bus drivers. When they denied the amount, some of Buro's accomplices beat up the drivers and damaged their buses.
Guha's union office at Dum Dum park depot was also ransacked and he received injuries in the clash. He also got life threats by Baral and his associates. A complaint was lodged by Guha at Lake Town police station and Baral, a resident of Lal Kuthi area at Dum Dum Park was arrested on Sunday night. The police have slapped charges of attempt to murder (section 307 of IPC) against Baral and others who are responsible for assault.
